The Mamas & Papas
After the break-up of the legendary Mugwumps and the Journeymen, John Philips and Denny Doherty formed a new group called the Magic Cyrkle which included John's wife, Michelle. Cass was the last member brought into the group although John didn't really want her in the group as he thought they could never be successful with someone of her size in the group.
One night, while hanging out with Barry McGuire, they were talking about bikers. Barry mentioned that the Hell's Angels called their women 'Mamas'. Cass jumped up yelling "I wanna be a Mama, I want to be a Mama", Michelle joined in and they danced around the room chanting. After a few minutes of this John said "I guess we're the Papas". Barry helped them secure a secure a 5 album deal with Dunhill records and the name stuck.
Their first single 'Go Where You Wanna Go' failed to chart, although I remember hearing it in constant rotation on bay area radio stations, but their second single 'California Dreaming' made good on the group's promise. Their first album became their only number one. Their third and last single 'Monday Monday' was a number one and gained them international success.
During the recording of their second album it became public knowledge that Michelle was having an affair with Denny Doherty and she was kicked out of the band and replaced with Lou Adler's girlfriend, Jill Gibson. Who sang on that second album is a controversial topic and there are many opinions concerning it. Only engineer Bones Howe and Lou Adler know who really sang on the LP.
In a few months Michelle was back in the band. The album yielded 3 singles and peaked at number 4 in the states. The first single 'I Saw Her Again' has a false start at the final chorus of the song and was later mimicked by John Sebastian on 'Darling Be Home Soon' and Kenny Loggins later repeated the theme in his 1980s song 'I'm Alright'. Paul McCartney wasn't as taken by how the group had come in too soon and said to the group "That has to be a mistake. Nobody is that clever".
In 1967 their third album was released. It peaked at number 2. Denny was in a fog of drink and drugs trying to get over Michelle Philips. John Philips and Lou Adler organized the Monterey Pop Festival. The band was the closing act of the show. They didn't rehearse and Denny showed up at the last minute to perform. They considered their show to be horrible.
The group made their last television performance together on the Ed Sullivan Show in June of 67. They then went to Europe to get some inspiration for their 4th album. While at a Dunhill Records party in England, Cass was hanging out with Mick Jagger when John Philips made a scathingly rude remark about her in front of all the guests. Cass told him to get stuffed, stormed out of the party and quit the group but....she was bound by contract to perform on their next album. The self titled album peaked at number 15 and was really saved by the Cass Elliott solo cover of 'Dream A Little Dream of Me'. Cass left the group to pursue her solo career but before she could take off Dunhill said that the band owed them 1 more album and threatened to sue each member for $250,000.00. The resulting album 'People Like US' only reached number 84. That was it for the original Mamas & Papas. They did enter the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, they were also inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame.

Kevin Gallagher I think Hendrix was still relatively unknown at that point... wow... Kind of a mis-match of music though...

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Maybe our taste for music was much broader then? I see ALOT of this... one group with another, each from a different musical universe... hard to imagine nowadays that an audience coming to see one would sit thru the set of the other.

Anyone who, at the top their game, would forgo a world tour in order to raise money for UNICEF is just 'tits' (as my Canadian friends say) in my book! And the fact that she showed up at the ill-fated Powder Ridge Rock Festival, which I and my friends made it to, and at which she actually played! when no one else did. So much for the rest of those tossers that didn't, Melanie had game and my 14 year-old anarchist hormones knew it.
About 30,000 of us showed up anyway, my krewe having driven from Ohio for the weekend, and Wiki pretty much sums it up saying no entertainment, no food, and no plumbing but.......about 70 drug dealers. Party in my book. Anyways, she was born in Queens, graduated in New Jersey, signed with Columbia but hit pay dirt with Buddha.....records that is.
So,
she played Woodstock (Melanie had
an office in the same building as the festival producers and had asked to perform), Powder Ridge (and I wonder if she even got paid
for it.......), Isle of Wight where she was introduced by Keith Moon.
(They should grant Keith a knighthood in absentia, shouldn't they?)
Melanie had a few hits then ~ Lay Down Lay Down, Beautiful People and
What Have They Done to My Song, Ma? and is still out there
performing and recording now.

Short and sweet. Steve doing his version of the tune, as host of the show. Enjoy april 18, 2012

Many rumors surround Thunders' death at the St. Peter
What is known for certain is that Johnny's room (no. 37) was ransacked and most of his possessions were missing (passport, makeup, clothes). Rigor mortis had set in with his body positioned in an unnatural state, described by eyewitnesses as "like a pretzel", underneath a coffee table. Friends and acquaintances acknowledge he had not been using heroin for some time, relying on his methadone prescriptions. The police did not open a criminal investigation.
Singer Willy DeVille, who lived next door to the hotel in which Thunders died, described his death this way:
I don't know how the word got out that I lived next door, but all of a sudden the phone started ringing and ringing. Rolling Stone was calling, the Village Voice called, his family called, and then his guitar player called. I felt bad for all of them. It was a tragic end, and I mean, he went out in a blaze of glory, ha ha ha, so I thought I might as well make it look real good, you know, out of respect, so I just told everybody that when Johnny died he was laying down on the floor with his guitar in his hands. I made that up. When he came out of the St. Peter's Guest House, rigor mortis had set in to such an extent that his body was in a U shape. When you're laying on the floor in a fetal position, doubled over - well, when the body bag came out, it was in a U. It was pretty awful."[4]
An autopsy was conducted by the New Orleans coroner, but served only to compound the mysteries. According to Thunders' biographer Nina Antonia as posted on the Jungle Records web site, the level of drugs found in his system was not fatal.[5] And according to the book "Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon" by Pamela Des Barres who interviewed Thunders' sister Marion, the autopsy confirmed evidence of advanced leukemia, which would explain the decline in Thunders' appearance in the final year of his life.[6] This also sheds light on the interview in Lech Kowalski's documentary "Born To Lose: The Last Rock and Roll Movie", where Thunders' sister Mary-Ann's husband says, "Only Johnny knew how sick he really was."
In a 1994 Melody Maker interview Thunders' manager Mick Webster described the efforts of his family, "We keep asking the New Orleans police to re-investigate, but they haven’t been particularly friendly. They seemed to think that this was just another junkie who had wandered into town and died. They simply weren’t interested."[7] Marion claims that the original police report is largely missing and Webster further explains that the Coroner who conducted the autopsy was fired for falsifying a report in another case.
Thunders was survived by his ex-wife Julie and four children:sons John, Vito, and Dino; and daughter Jamie Genzale." nv

Terry Greene A very brilliant, if insane, man as we all know now. I remember stalking the Rolling Stones in 1965 and lurking in the halls of the RCA Victor recording studios on Sunset only to see Mr. Spector arrive in Mod suit and dark glasses. My fellow stalkers did not know who he was and decided we should give up against my protestations that he was PHIL SPECTOR, for the love of mac 'n cheese, and the Stones must be on their way. They were unconvinced and took me home. ;(

QOTSA called a friend of my mine and I to come down and hang with them while they recorded in the big room there.....Elvis' old room and a fav of Frank Sinatra's as well. We got there and QOTSA were gone so we jammed all night. I broke 3 bass drum heads. I guess they thought we were with the band and they just kept bringing new bass drums. My friend, Tex Mosely, of the Hangmen, was on lead guitar, Gary from the Bad Brains on bass, Gilby Clark of Slash's Snake Pit on rhythm guitar, and me breaking the drums. Great room. We went into the vault and saw all the masters of Aretha, Frank, Elvis, Rod Stewart and everybody. it was pretty amazing.

Terry Greene Never thought these words would be spoken but Tina was actually lucky to be married to Ike rather than Phil who was later convicted of murder. Ronnie Spector, lead singer of the Ronettes (Be My Baby), did marry Phil and reported in her biography that he kept her "as a near-prisoner and limited her opportunities to pursue her musical ambitions. She said that he would force her to watch the film Citizen Kane to remind her she would be nothing without him. Spector's domineering attitude led to the dissolution of their marriage. Bennett was forbidden to speak to the Rolling Stones or tour with the Beatles, because Phil Spector feared that she would be unfaithful.
Furthermore, Ronnie claimed Spector showed her a gold coffin with a glass top in his basement, promising to kill and display her if she left him. During Spector's reclusive period in the late 1960s, he reportedly kept his wife locked inside their mansion. She claimed he also hid her shoes to dissuade her from walking outside, and kept the house dark because he did not want anyone to see his balding head. She later walked out of the house through the closed and locked rear sliding glass door, shoeless, shattering the glass as she left, and feet all cut up by the time she got to the gate. She never returned. Ronnie Spector filed for divorce in 1972. Years later she said, "I can only say that when I left in the early 1970s, I knew that if I didn't leave at that time, I was going to die there". Sound familiar? -
The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Big time. She had a good time with the Stones......Dee Dee Ramone had great Phil stories........held hostage at gunpoint kinda stuff. The nefarious part of Hollywood, eh?
-
Terry Greene Oh, she was a naughty girl! I heard about another gun pulling incident with Ike. My big sister used to go out with a booking agent who booked mostly soul acts like Ike and Tina, Little Richard and "little" Stevie Wonder. He regailed us with stories about how Ike would burst into the room waving a gun demanding money the second he walked off stage. What a frackin' character. One time I was on an international flight with them. I put Ike to shame in bad behaviour eight miles high (and no, it wasn't The Mile High Club kinda thing AND I didn't punch anybody).
The line up was Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Ian (Stu) Stewart on piano, Dick Tay
Jones intended for the the band to play primary Chicago Blues but Jagger and Richards brought the rock 'n' roll of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley to the band.
Bassist Bill Wyman joined in December and drummer Charlie Watts the following January to form the long-standing Stones rhythm section.

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Mike Johnson and John pulled one over on John's wife at the time, Susie. They showed up saying John was driving Mike to the airport and that Mike needed to borrow suitcases. John's mom was over that night cooking filet mignon for the whole family. Mike and John disappeared into the bedroom for a little while, emerged with two suitcases, and said good bye. Susie asked "What about the steaks?". She was upset. John's mother came out and said 'I'll take the steaks out and we'll just wait until you come back." Some wait! They took off to the airport and left for Cuba and stayed there for months. The suitcases were full of John's stuff.
