Yup... that's Mama Cass - at 3:28 - amazed!
'tis true, Janis was a sweetheart - as any of the Dick Cavett interviews
show (btw... if you'd like to see them here, just say so... they really
bring her back).
But that was when she was sitting down. Standing up, in front of a mike... yow - a wholly different animal... and, of course, we've got some testimonials to that, too. We'll unleash that in a moment
So who was it, tucked between beginning and end of the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival who blew the crowd away? Janis Joplin, lead singer, Big Brother and the Holding Company.
The band was big in San Fran when, almost a year earlier (on June 4, 1966), she joined them. Their style changed, Janis was touted as a phenom, Cheap Thrills ('68) hit #1 on the Billboard 200 - they moved forward, and then apart.
Eventually known as The Queen of Rock and Roll, as well as The Queen of Psychedelic Soul, she ranked #28 on the Rolling Stone 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

(from Rain Equine) Yes! I 'shared' this with my father, drummer for the band: "Cat Mother". He and the guys were scouting for an additional player for their first album: "The Street Giveth and the Street Taketh Away", and saw Janis in a club in Boston- pre Monterey Pop... ....good times

(from Abbatinko Hernandez) SAW HER THE NIGHT BEFORE SHE DIED BUYING WINE AND CIGARETTES AT THE MARKET ON HIGHLAND ACROSS FROM THE BOWL.... SHE LOOKED LIKE DEATH WARMED OVER.......
- poor thing, she was out of it. I was with Cynthia Plaster Caster at the market--which was up the street on Franklin and Grace--if my memory serves me correctly...
-
(from the LA FP 60's Music Site) Probably does... That market, too, was only around the corner from us (back then). Thanks for stopping by... we had sadly reported the 'news' that Janis had just passed away only a few blocks from our officeHere is the obit from the events that followed that night...
-
(from Abbatinko Hernandez) I "spun" records at STARWOOD for awhile, and also at RODNEY's club-- but he got pissed off at me because in a CREEM mag article sometime in 1974, I was picked among the 100 "people" to know in LA...AND HE WASN'T !!!!!!!! LMFAO
It was a small club... with a giant talent on stage
A lot of folks, courtesy of her lack of an appearance in the film, don't
know that Janis played Woodstock. Here she is playing "Try A Little Bit
Harder" for half a million stoned hippies. The band mostly played
songs from her "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic
Blues Again Mama". The stand out track from her Woodstock material is
probably "Kozmic Blues". She did a varied choice of covers such as the
Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody", Eddie Floyd's "Raise Your Hand", "Work Me
Lord" an old traditional arrangement which Janis gives a hell of a work
out, and a new version of Gershwin's "Summertime". The last two tunes
were possibly the highlights of the show. She went over well enough to
do two encores. The first featured the old Big Brother chestnut "Piece
of My Heart" and the second was a blistering version of Big Mama
Thornton's "Ball and Chain". The Cornelius Brothers sang most of "Can't
Turn You Loose" with Janis making only occasional contributions.

(from the LA FP 60's Music Site) Gotta say 'Thanks' to Ruben for finding this... now do yourself a favor and go Full Screen and get a faceful of Janis. A sweet little girl that sings big.
-
(from Danny Treiber) Janis live, golden. Thanks. -
'Thanks', Danny, for stopping by! Glad you liked this... so few people have actually seen her WS appearances - 'cept, of course, the half million folks who were actually there. Pls do 'share' this clip while it is still copyright-claim free! (As mentioned above, the LA FP - is involved in a Project (the VRRP) to KEEP these types of clips on the net. Want more info... just say so :))
It
was a long ride from Big Brother and the Holding Company to the Kozmic
Blues Band. Did you know the title of Cheap Thrills had been shortened
by the record company from Sex, Dope, and Cheap Thrills? Most folks
think of Janis only in terms of success
but the Kozmic Blues Band went over like a fart in church for most
people. There are still people in the San Francisco Bay Area, myself
included, that view her as a sell out for leaving Big Brother to become
"a big star" and that is, indeed, why she left. The various San
Francisco groups were considered "churches" by the psychedelic
intelligentsia. When your preacher hits the bricks to become Barbra
Streisand you tend to feel a little abandoned. Who would have thought
they would turn Streisand into Janis for a film?
Sure, Janis was more talented than Big Brother. Sure that band never rehearsed and that pissed Janis off. She was approached by record company execs who lured her away with the notion that she wouldn't have to share any of her money in an equal split with the band. Then Bennet Glotzer, my old lunch time drinking buddy, filled her head with the trappings of fame. He is also why Janis is not featured in the Woodstock film. He wouldn't allow the filming, the same as he did for Blood, Sweat & Tears. The Kozmic Blues Band soon became a total embarassment to Janis and she ditched them and started yet another new band after her Woodstock appearance. Here's Kozmic Blues Band doing "Can't Turn You Loose" at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, 1969.

Some insight as to why she sang. (She often appeared on Cavett's show.... but you can easily come to the conclusion that she would have spoken with you just as comfortably.)
As to the title of this clip...it's but a blip in the conversation... and should, instead, not be regarded
as criticism as much as adding to her explanation as to how music should be felt... not analyzed.

-
(from Kevin Gallagher) I'm interested... That is a good idea.

Johnny Rivers
Born John Henry Ramistella in New York and transplanted to Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a youngster, he went on to learn guitar around the age of 8. He cut his first sides at age 14 for the Suede label with his band The Spades.
He had no formal musical training whatsoever, a real plus in my opinion as rock is an attitude and not a category, and went on to conquer the top ten after Alan Freed suggested a name change. Thinking of the muddy Mississippi he changed his last name to Rivers.
He relocated to Los Angeles, found a long term engagement at the Whiskey A Go Go, recorded the song which put him on the map, 'Secret Agent Man' and followed that song up with a Number One hit 'Poor Side of Town'.
Johnny went on to perform at Monterey Pop, continued to make records and became a bit of a wizard in record production. Johnny is still out there kicking.

Jefferson Airplane
The Airplane formed in San Francisco and debuted at the Matrix on August 13th, 1965. Original singer, Signe Anderson, who performed vocal chores on their debut album 'Takes Off' left the group and was replaced by Grace Slick from the Bay Area group 'The Great Society'. With her she brought the song White Rabbit which hit number 8 in the charts and became a million seller.
The group played both the Monterey Pop and Jazz Festivals, among others, most notably Woodstock and Altamont. The band was under suspicion by the U.S. Government and spied on for having joked about spiking the Washington D.C. water supply with LSD which, of course, our public servants took seriously. I think it's still a good idea today.
The band had a lengthy career with many great albums, both as a band and their solo endeavors, as well as their offshoot bands, Jefferson Starship, and their less well-known act, Jefferson Shuttle Craft and Hot Tuna. They played their last show in September 1971 and were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Not bad for a bunch of radical anti-establishment kids.

Logan Essex The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long
The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone
And through an open window where no curtain hung
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
One begins to read between the pages of a look
The shape of sleepy music, and suddenly you're hooked
Through the rain upon the trees, that kisses on the run
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
You can't stay and live my way
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind
You always say you won't go away
But I know what it always has been, it always has been
A transparent dream beneath an occasional sigh
Most of the time I just let it go by
Now I wish it hadn't begun
I saw you, yes I saw you, comin' back to me
Strolling the hills overlooking the shore
I realize I've been here before
The shadow in the mist could have been anyone
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me
Small things like reasons are put in a jar
Whatever happened to wishes wished on a star?
Was it just something that I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me -

The
Airplane were essentially a folk rock act in the beginning. They would
rapidly lose that edge but this tune finds them in fine vocal folk rock
form. They could give the Mamas & Papas a run for their money in
the harmony department. Signe's replacement, Grace, struts her stuff.

The
album BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE is a narrative concept album that tells
the story of a counter-culture revolution against the oppressions of
"Uncle Samuel" in a country called Amerika, and a plan to hijack a
starship from orbit and journey into space in search of a new home.
The
album was recorded in at Pacific High Recording Studios and Wally
Heider Recording Studios in San Francisco by Kantner and Slick with a
collection of musician friends that included members of Jefferson
Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Crosb
y,
Stills, Nash, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Electric Flag. The
credit to Jefferson Starship reflected many things -- the all-star
line-up, the album being an evolutionary progression from Jefferson
Airplane, and finally the story it relates of the hijacking of a
starship.
By Kantner's admission, the underlying premise of the narrative was derived in part from the works of science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein, particularly the novel Methuselah's Children. Kantner went so far as to write to Heinlein to obtain permission to use his ideas. Heinlein wrote back that over the years, many people had used his ideas but Paul was the first one to ask for permission, which he granted. Blows was the first rock album to ever be nominated for a Hugo Award, in 1971 in the category of Best Dramatic Presentation. Paul Kantner -- vocals, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, banjo, bass machine Grace Slick -- piano, vocals Jerry Garcia -- banjo on "Let's Go Together", pedal steel guitar on "Have You Seen the Stars Tonite", sound effects and vocals on "XM", lead guitar on "Starship" Bill Kreutzmann -- drums on "Let's Go Together" Mickey Hart -- percussion on "Have You Seen the Stars Tonite", sound effects and vocals on "XM" Joey Covington -- drums and vocals on "Mau Mau", congas on "Hijack" Jack Casady -- bass on "A Child Is Coming" and "Sunrise" David Crosby -- vocals and guitar on "A Child Is Coming" and "Have You Seen the Stars Tonite", background vocals on "Starship" Graham Nash -- congas on "Hijack", sound effects on "Home", background vocals on "Have You Seen The Stars Tonite", "Starship" David Freiberg -- background vocals on "Starship" Harvey Brooks -- bass on "Starship" Peter Kaukonen -- lead guitar on "Mau Mau" Phill Sawyer -- sound effects on "Home" and "XM"
