Marching forward with the 'D's'... it's
The Dillards
You may think you've never heard or heard of the Dillards... but what about the Darlings? (If you watched 'The Andy Griffith Show' when you were a sprout, you heard THEM :)).
Here they are in Sheriff Taylor's parlor jamming with Andy himself. This would be around the time of their first release "Back Porch Bluegrass" in 1963.

The
Dillards' second album, "Live! Almost!" was released in 1964. This
album nearly succeeded in introducing bluegrass as a viable alternative
to the upscale folk audience that was gathering in such hip places as
Laurel Canyon and the Trou
bador at the
time. It is a song about a dog and....outhouses in winter. Some of us
can relate. I had some icy nights on the commune and relatives to visit
in the Ozarks. Plenty of scorpions, timber rattlers, and outhouses to
go 'round. But man, the food tasted so much better. The veggies
actually had flavor. The eggs. The milk. The soy
products........wahoo.

Dang! What could have possibly distracted me from the further discussion of the Dillards!? Hope you enjoy this one...

also had time to drop in and jam with their old friend, Shreiff Taylor,
on the Andy Griffith Show to reprise the group Andy & the Darlings.
Here they are playing their hit "Dooley".

Then...
1968 introduced the world to a new Dillards. A bit slowed down and
introspective. The Dillards, like everyone, were affected by all that
was going on around them. They released Wheatstraw Suite that year.
It's a great track as t
his song, "She
Sang Hymns Out of Tune" will attest. For some reason, I can't help but
feel that The Guess Who's 'Wheatfield Soul' album was a bit of a nod and
a tip of the hat to the boys.

The man who took the Newport Festival by storm back in the day and influenced....well, everyone, passed on yesterday. RIP. nv
I
think Donovan picked up some of his flat picking style from Doc and we
all know where that went. Straight from Donovan to John Lennon and at
least four songs on the White Album. nv
Another
one in a blues vein here. Doc had seven Grammys under his belt, the
Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement award, and Bill Clinton gave
him the National Medal for the Arts, recognizing Doc's huge influence on
national heritage music. nv
The
Last Steam Engine Train with Doc, Chet and Leo Kottke somewhere in
there. Sometimes we lose an artist and it feels like the end times for a
genre. The old blues pickers are going and the old country pickers too.
Adios. nv

The
Los Angeles Free Press would like to congratulate Donovan on his
induction to the Rock Hall of Fame! Detractors in the early days of his
career claimed he was a Dylan clone but I think that is way off the
mark. They were both just minin
g the same
Woody Guthrie folk protest territory. Dylan went commercial. Donovan
took a left turn and spawned the genesis of Led Zeppelin during the
Hurdy Gurdy Man sessions, the Folk-Psyche movement, and glam. Some time
after this video was shot Donovan was running around with a a gypsy
bongo player named Dave. I would argue that this same blueprint was used
by Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took in the early Tyranosaurs Rex.

While
we at LAFP are giving our kudos to Donovan on his induction to the Rock
Hall of Fame I would like to tender this parody based on an actual
event for your consideration on the man's contributions to music in
general and to the music of his friends. nolan voyd

How cool is this? One of the earliest Doors ads in existence, it's from the early May, 1966 issue of the LA Free Press. At this point the Doors were a garage band, and Jim was still singing with his back to the crowd. It wasn't until ate that summer, when they recorded their legendary debut album for Elektra records, that myth and fame was theirs.
Page also includes ads for such gems as Jean Luc-Godard's Contempt, and Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground's Exploding Plastic Inevitable!

- Cool! I saw them at CSULB and at the Round House in Chalk Garden London. Must say Jim was pretty messed up. Not the greatest performer, in all honesty. In fact, they we're booed at CSULB 'cause they showed up 2 - 3 hours late and Jim fell off the stage (on me) drunk. Later, in late '87, visited his grave in Per La Chaise, Paris. U2 were standing discreetly in the background in long, black coats. There were young and old "kids" sitting around the grave site passing spliffs and bottles around. I was the only one there old enough to have actually seen the Doors, being from LA and all. He was worshiped by all present. I don't think that man can ever rest in peace with the madness going on above his grave. Still, it was touching how multiple generations will never forget him. (Terry Greene)

Kurt Page Morrison went from his "seminary school" intro straight into "Light My Fire." Unexpected and very cool.

What year Kurt?

-
Kurt Page 1970! Man, you work fast, Steven. On the set list I can even see the Petition the Lord with Prayer right before "Light My Fire." When Morrison worked up to screaming "You cannot petition the lord with prayer!" he just shrugged and delivered the line in a ho-hum manner. Densmore hit the snare, and they kicked into "Light My Fire." Epic. -

Morrison is alive, well and living in Oregon. What does Jim do these

Mark Kolb "Things, eventually, went right for this guy here." Really? Dead of Alcohol and Drugs at the age of 27. Can you imagine telling that kid that he would be dead in 10 years? I would say things went terribly wrong for this guy here. Do you think that dying that way at that age is a fulfilled life? It's nothing short of a tragic life.
-
How about this, Mark Kolb? "Things eventually went right for this guy, then terribly wrong." He went from being a student to being a Rock Star... no, make that ROCK STAR. You, me, us... all remember Jim Morrison. We play his music / we love his music... we know his lyrics were well-informed, his style innovative. And where he went from there is where no one really wants to go, and a place that no parent wants their child to go - one step too far on a path that has no return. There was, first, a bright moment - to which I was referring - and then a very black moment... as you, correctly, point out. Let us all hope that we, and our children, are on the path that takes us to the best that we can be... and that is the one we travel on and not stray from. I'll add in this, tho - that path may not always be , and should not be - a smooth one - finding one's way over rough spots builds one up. Even the morass that sometimes sucks us down often elicits talents we never knew we had or ever employed. Did the same for Jim.. just not that last time. As far as we know.

both of 'em to her. Happy Bday, Donna! And thanks for being a Friend
