Here’s why, of the many tests officially given at UCLA, the Acid Test was not one of them. And, yes, the Grateful Dead played live. (btw, our Acid Test Collection – complete from our reporter-on-the-scene (well, actually IN the scene) to reader letters, classified ads, and more – IS available with your request.)
The Chambers Brothers surely had a different train in mind, but the lyric worked for me… so Welcome Aboard the Grand Funk Railroad!
Birthed in ’68, it was their usual all-out performance at the Atlanta Pop Festival – a gig they took on for free – that got them their contract with Capitol.
Here's what they looked like and sounded like back then. When it's done, Scroll on DOWN v (or try it again on Full Screen!)
It’s
still a ‘G’ Whiz kind week… so, from our Archives, it’s a photo of
George Harrison (as in the Beatles) checking US out! (You might
remember we promised to run this as a Special give-away to a new Friend
of ours. Beth, this one is for
you –
will be printed and waiting!) And then, down BELOW at the next post,
our second featured artist of the week – and, surely, a side seldom seen
now-a-days – the Grateful Dead at an Acid Test.
Here
it is(!) – one of the most famous LA FP ads - and it’s for an event
that did NOT even happen. The Grateful Dead were booked to play, but
the plug got pulled! Full story follows v (Scroll DOWN).

Bob Ohsiek Similar intriguing signs & handbills appeared on campus for a Long Beach State test too, which didn't happen.

Our
first advert showed Grand Funk in a mini-club announced in micro-print /
on the bill, but no big deal. Constant work and a great stage presence,
meant that booking an auditorium for an extra evening was a necessity.
Not only did they not require a supporting act to boost attendance, they
pulled it in to help intro one that was just coming out the gate -
Black Sabbath. (Maybe one day they'll be just as big.)
John Fredrick Williams I
wish I could plug-in and reveal my memories of past concerts I was
fortunate to witness? Let's call this ability, "Our Minds Eye". Next you
will probably tell me, "We Already Can"! I thought I was so aware...

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site We posed a question on our page... perhaps one of you know the answer... HOW was it possible for Capitol Records to sign GFRxR in July at the Atlanta Festival and release a full album in just 1 month????
Nevertheless, when they pulled into LA after such a hot gig just a month earlier, the announcement of their arrival was less than auspicious… check out the micro print in this first advert. Good thing that Capitol (they couldn’t get them into a bigger club?) also took out an ad. (Scroll on DOWN v for that.)
Here’s the first advert for the album. The real question is… HOW did they get it produced so quickly? If Capitol signed them at the Festival on the July 4th weekend, did they do this entire album in just a month? You tell us… we’ll tell the world. (via our soon-to-open worldwide website!)
Mark, Don and Mel in a previous incarnation........Terry Knight is the son of Doris Day.........who is Terry Knight? nv
-
Terry Greene Terry "Knight" was actually Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher. Melcher had a lot of contacts in the music business including the Beach Boys and, especially, Dennis Wilson. Terry introduced Charles Manson to Dennis and they jammed, maybe even recorded one or two of Manson's songs. When things didn't go the way Charlie expected, he sent his gang after Melcher. Fortunately for Melcher, he had moved from the Hollywood Hills home he once lived in. Unfortunately for Sharon Tate, she had moved in. The rest is history.

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Wasn't there a Terry Melcher, Charlie Manson connection? Same dude, right?

Gary A. Schneider Sorry.......Terry Knight was NOT Terry Melcher! Terry Knight (Knapp) was from Flint, MI and was a DJ in the Flint area in the early 60's before he started his group, Terry Knight & The Pack!
-
Gary A. Schneider Terry Knight went on to manage and produce Grand Funk Railroad and BLOODROCK in the late 60's and early 70's!
A little older....a little poorer...the nuge and mark farner.....but it works. nv
