Well, well and we couldn't be happier to say that we just heard from a 1967 Founding Member of Black Pearl itself... Mr. Oak O'Connor himself! A wonderful conversation full of tidbits that we can add to our upcoming website - about a boa constrictor(!) and more.
So, with this call as a reminder, am herewith posting the 1968 LA Freep advert for the gig mentioned below... the first-ever celebration of Brucemas. (And the second party for the LA Free Press' 4th Happy Birthday!)
Thanks
so much for posting another gem (in this case, a pearl) of a video! It
is, in fact, a conversion from FILM(!) to video, and it’s of the
second Free Press sponsored event for its own 4th B-day, which really
was the first Brucemas ever.
Black
Pearl had been invited back after their very well received set at the
first LA Free Press' 4th B-day Party event in July, a month earlier.
Even among 10 hours of continuous music by some of the most
musically-talented of the day, they had been singled out in the LAFP as a
"hitherto unknown group whose light can no longer be concealed".
As proud keepers of the historical archives of the LA FP, we are herewith providing the actual page of this Brucemas event that honored the too-early ended life of Lenny Bruce. And its review of Black Pearl is even better.

Couldn't
help but notice another 'B'eautiful connection... Black Pearl (a real
favorite of ours) is ALSO in the original 1960's advert of the previous
post. And it just so happens that Oak O'Connor, their drummer, put
together this video (converted from FILM) of OUR own 'B' day! Here's
the LA Free Press' 4th Birthday Party at Santa Monica Beach - more than
40 years ago....

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Aron Kay Thanks for the courtesy of keeping your correction 'hidden' - of course, and as usual, you're the very best of historians - the event WAS at Venice Pier (NOT Santa Monica Beach)! Pls don't stay in the background - Have the Happiest of New Years - and a Simcah Torah. Besides the video is cool... 'share' it for all the right reasons!
