THE BLUES PROJECT
>> The Blues Project had a well-received appearance at Monterey on June 18th, and maybe many people then thought that the summer of ’67 would be great for the band.
>> But, actually, they were more or less in the process of breaking up by then, so they did, after a handful of gigs and the recording of a last (forgettable) single. That was in September, the very same month when it aired on the WNEW network, and of their last television appearance during a 2-hour television special on pop music titled ‘The Steve Paul Scene’.
>> Here, below, The Blues Project perform one of their most well-known songs, Flute Thing, during the above mentioned TV show. Enjoy!
Al Kooper
Alan Peter Kuperschmidt born in Boston and raised by a nice Jewish family in Hollis Hills, Queens, was a musician, a producer and a songwriter. His first foray into public performance was with the Royal Teens and you’ve probably heard the song they are famous for, 'Short Shorts'. He then authored the Gary Lewis & The Playboys hit 'This Diamond Ring'.
One of the things Al is noted for is his relationship with Bob Dylan. Al had some brass actually sneaking into the 'Like A Rolling Stone' sessions while the producer was away for a few minutes. When the producer, Tom Wilson, returned Al was playing away with everyone else. Dylan loved it.
Al’s credits are so extensive as to require an encyclopedia, but notables are the choral and musical arrangements for the Stones' 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', his Super Sessions series, and all his credits on all the Lynyrd Skynyd records. Wikipedia lists my favorite Al Kooper quote: "I am so pleased to be in Britain, I could just sit and pour tea over my head".

Terry Greene Really? News to me. Where are you getting this "info", nv? I saw the yokels with the Grateful Dead in London. Vaudville and acid rock? Patutey. I was on acid when I attended this hellish concert and "Alice" was clearly a fraud.

Terry Greene OK, we have already agreed to disagree, to understate it. To further disagree, I never "got" how the Dead were so popular. ONCE, once in my life, trippin' like a do-dah man, could I stand hearing them. Don't tell my few Dead Head friends. We're still on good terms. Alice Cooper and band were never even considered as musicians. Good thing we only communicate via the Internet, eh? We'd probably insult each other to death.

Terry Greene OK., nv. My source is ME. I don't care how many records the buffoon has sold, I heard them, saw him and he was truly a vaudville act in the middle of a real musical revolution. I'm surprised you're using LP sales as proof of talent. To use one of you're comments to me, "I thought I was being nice". Yeah, although I like ya, I gotta problem widya. I'm more from Boyle Heights than Brooklyn Heights. I am definately a Shark. East coast sucks, West coast rules. Grrrrrr.

Rain Equine OMG! How funny, my babysitter was Arlo's little brother Jodie(sp?), and my father's band "Cat Mother" was produced by Jimi!! It's like old home week just looking at this!

The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site The Los Angeles Free Press 60's Music Site Hey Rain! Best to you and Michael!! It was him and the other guys in the band that STARTED the 'Shout-Outs'' that got the ball rolling FOR WOODSTOCK, right? If so, then it would be appropriate to put up some Cat Mother history here for our coming tribute to Jimi (y'know, the guy that played at that gig). Can you get Michael to tell you about the Shout-Outs and how it led to CM being the ONLY group ever to be produced by Jimi?

Association, The

In 1965 an act known as The Inner Tubes with a revolving talent roster that included Doug Dillard, Mama Cass, David Crosby and others, would evolve into a 13 piece folk-rock act known as The Men that was the house band for a time at the world famous Troubadour night club in Los Angeles. Wood shedding and honing their skills, this group would further distill into the heady brew that became known as The Association.
The Association rehearsed for about 6 months before gigging around Los Angeles at such places as the Ice House in Pasadena where they were a regular act. They soon signed with Valiant Records a label which was then snapped up by Warner Brothers. Success followed with the song Along Comes Mary entering the Billboard charts at number 7.
The album ‘Along Comes…The Association’ followed and placed a healthy number 5 position in the charts. Not too shabby for a first album! Their second album, Renaissance only charted at number 34 and included a personal favorite of mine Pandora’s Golden Heebie Jeebies.
Line-up changes and Ruthann Friedman’s great song ‘Windy’ catapulted the band right back up the charts along with the album which proceeded it, Insight Out.
The band then became the first band in history to play at a rock festival, the Monterey Pop Festival.
Their next single, Never My Love, went to number 2 in the Billboard charts and has been credited by BMI as being the song with the second most airplay in US history with somewhere over 7 million plays.
... continuing with our NEW POST-MONTEREY SERIES (thru '67)
Here comes along THE ASSOCIATION.
>> The summer of ’67 was, arguably, the most successful time in the music life of The Association. In June, they opened the Monterey International Pop Festival and, at the same time, their 3rd album, ‘Insight Out - Windy’, was released and immediately reached No.8 in the Billboard Hot 100 album chart.
>> Soon after, on July 1, the first single taken from that album, ‘Windy’, topped the Billboard Hot 100 single chart. The band’s winning streak continued with their next single also taken from their 3rd album, ‘Never My Love’, it went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 single chart. Later, in October, it made it to No.1 on the Cash Box Top 100 single chart.
>> Oh, and, by the way, in August the band played at another big music festival. It is, actually, the oldest outdoor music festival in the United States, the annual Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois. The festival was lauded for presenting world-class music and attracts about 600,000 fans to some 120 to 150 events that span all genres from classical music to jazz to music theater over
each three-month summer season.
Here, below, The Association performs their current hit single ‘Windy’ at the Ravinia Festival, enjoy!
