About Us - A counter-culture icon, The Los Angeles Free Press
We featured performers whose music provided the soundtrack to a time that changed the very essence of our culture . From the heyday of the hippie movement, 1964 through '69, our archives preserve a musical history like none other.
We have (though surely before it's ready) opened this site now as it has suddenly become imperative to make this information available; there is, presently, a real danger of it disappearing!! (More about that right HERE.)
Arguably, the LA FP was America's first real "underground newspaper". Preserved in 63 Historical Collections, mentioned in more than 400 books, on several hundred wikipedia pages, and with 1000's of references to it on Google, it's widely recognized not just as a 'reporter' of the historical events of the 60's, but as an integral part of them!
This is especially true with regard to the music scene... when the Left Coast was the place to be! LA was, day and night, a musical trip - new sounds and groovy light shows - clubs like the Cheetah, the Magic Mushroom, The Whisky and a dozen more, featured hundreds of performers that hardly anyone had ever heard of... back then.
Who actually came to play? Dave, Del, Dion, Donovan and even more 'D's. Further down the list, it's James, Janis, Jimmy, John, Joe, Joan, Joni, Jose, and Judy. We can do this all day long, from A to Z. And you can, too... because it was the LA Free Press (us) that most often first announced these performers' 'arrival' - those initial adverts putting them in the eye of the era, and in our collective consciousness forever!
Now, for the very first time(!), we are publishing our entire collection of them. Day by day, week by week. For you. For free.
Many have full-on psychedelic art and insanely low admission prices. Enjoy them all!
We take great pride in being the Keepers of this historical Archive. Please don't hesitate to be in touch; in every instance we'll try to answer your questions, find the items that you are looking for, assist in your projects, and so on. Contact us at info@LosAngelesFreePress.com
